How do you get published?

We only went and did it! Yup, bagged ourselves a SECOND Fitness Editorial feature in this months Editorial Magazine!
We get asked a lot of photography related questions, so thought it best to give some advice that we have found useful over the years on how to get your work published, hopefully this will help you get that first publication!:
-
Firstly you have to choose an image / images that you love, and by love i mean REALLY love. That image should basically summarise the whole of that one photo shoot. This is what we call the money shot. I always think of the money shot as the one photograph that i would save from that photo shoot if my hard drive was about to blow up!
-
What does your chosen image say to you? What story does it tell? Chances are if the image you have chosen evokes a feeling from you then it will more than likely evoke that same emotion in others. Show your friends the image, ask them to be honest, this will also help put together a bio if the magazine are asking for that (but also remember friends can be biased too!).
-
Do your research! Sure there are a million and one magazines out there, but you need to narrow down your list to a handful that suit your style of photography. The magazines that will compliment your work and not work against it. Remember, even though you are the one wanting to be published, don’t be a fool and fall for the first magazine that comes your way. Being published in a magazine that doesn’t suit you and your style can sometimes do more harm than good.
-
Of course you love the images you have chosen, they are yours, you took them and you were there, so you remember the feeling you got from the shoot. Now Mr Big Mag might not necessarily feel the same way about your images, but thats cool, you cant please everyone.
-
Oh hi Huf Mag, how you doing Vogue? Remember guys there are hundreds of big players out there, but just as many equally creative and beautiful independent magazines too! If your starting off and trying to build up your name, theres nothing stopping you submitting to the smaller, lesser know magazines with a slightly better chance of a publication, and you will also meet some wonderful people along the way!
- Don’t give up. Be persistent! If your magazine of choice rejects your submission, guess what? take the knock back but see it as a spur for you to get down to the next submission on your list and keep going. Self belief is the key ingredient to a published article in any discipline. If you don’t believe in your work, then how can you expect others to?
and finally… If you do hear back from a magazine, or a magazine approaches you to be featured, and it suits your style and photography then remember that there is no ‘I’ in ‘team’. Make sure you credit ALL of your team guys! There is nothing worse than seeing all your hard work and have no mention. After all your incredible team got you this far didn’t they? Make sure you credit their ass’.
Hope this helps you in your quest for a publication! But remember your skill isn’t defined on how many times your images have been mentioned or published, it boils down to you staying true to your cause and remembering why you do what you do in the first place. Those that are the best, shouldnt have to say so.
